Urban Prototype Elementary School
Calmeca Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language is part of the City of Chicago’s construction program for new elementary schools. Based on an L-shaped prototype design, the 112,000- square-foot school houses 900 students, pre-K through 8th grade. The academy includes 24 typical classrooms and six pre-kindergarten classrooms. The library and dedicated areas for art, music, and computer science overlook one of the building’s green roof areas. The school is designed to share its gymnasium, cafeteria, and library with the community while keeping academic areas secure.
Calmeca boasts an exciting array of sustainable features, including a high-efficiency building envelope, 50-percent green roof, and restored natural habitat. High acoustical performance for core learning spaces responds to the school’s proximity to Midway Airport,
The Calmeca Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language received LEED Gold certification, as well as a Brick In Architecture Award.
