Envisioning Futures: Master Planning

MASTER PLANNING/FACILITY REORGANIZATION
New Building, Kraft Foods Technology Center

STR’s proficiency in educational facilities naturally extends into corporate offices, research facilities, meeting spaces, and visitor-focused areas. STR’s new building at the Kraft Foods Technology Center represents one phase of a master plan developed by STR for the Fortune 500 company. The Center is Kraft’s primary research and development site in the United States.

Kraft wanted to reorganize inefficiently located and aging facilities on its campus to enhance continuity of operations and work efficiencies.

To meet this goal, STR began by demolishing a 90-year-old, 70,000-square-foot building, plus out buildings that housed laboratories, offices, storage facilities, and pilot plants, with most functions standing on the opposite side of the corporate campus from their newer counterparts.

STR exciting new design unites all laboratory functions on the south of the campus in a 150,000- square-foot Office-Lab building, while pilot plant functions are consolidated to the north in a 50,000-square-foot facility. The buildings feature efficient, high-tech work spaces that encourage interaction and flow between research and office functions, while the buildings’ sleek design and silver metallic metal panel cladding announce that Kraft is very much a leader in the 21st century. Also included in the project is a 5,000-square-foot storage building, as well as a campus-wide chilled water loop distribution system.

STR reorganized the site to improve traffic flow and security, bringing in a new signalized intersection, parking, and drive modifications. In addition, a 60-inch Village sewer was relocated and a new 24-inch sewer was installed under an existing building to comply with flood plain restrictions, which had not existed when other facilities were built.
