School district officials, students, teachers, and community members celebrated the official opening of the new classroom wing addition at Grass Lake School in Antioch, Ill., last week. Designed by STR Partners, a Chicago-based architecture firm, the 14,890-sf project replaces the 1947 addition and includes a secure main entry, five classrooms, a learning resource center, restrooms, and special education classrooms. The two-toned brick exterior is accented with metal paneling and serves to complement the existing brick structure.
Students led tours of the cheerful new learning spaces during the May 24th opening. Bright, pastel-colored walls and floor tiles sparkle against the otherwise white interior, and natural light streams in through large, abundant windows. Dedicated to providing a safe, 21st century learning environment for its students, Grass Lake School District 36 moved to build the addition after establishing various improvement goals for the district’s aging facilities.
